Ground Works & Land Services
Eight service lines: ground clearing, site prep, hauling and material delivery, levelling and grading, gravel driveways, light excavation, drainage and mowing. Anything from a single afternoon of brush cutting to a driveway rebuilt end to end.

Ground Clearing
Ground clearing removes brush, briars, saplings, vines, surface roots and invasive species from open and semi-wooded ground, leaving it workable again.

Site Prep
Site prep clears and levels ground ahead of a shed, addition, outbuilding or food plot — with or without stripping topsoil.
Details →
Hauling & Delivery
Hauling and delivery means gravel, topsoil, mulch, sand or compost sourced, delivered and spread exactly where you want it — within about 50 miles of Hemlock.
Details →
Leveling & Grading
Levelling and grading brings ruts, low spots and rough ground back to an even surface that sheds water instead of holding it.
Details →
Gravel Driveways
Gravel driveway work cuts out potholes, re-compacts the base, lays fresh gravel and crowns the surface so it drains instead of puddling.
Details →
Light Excavation
Light excavation covers trenches for water line, conduit, tile or downspouts, stump removal, and footings for decks, sheds and small additions — not basements or commercial foundations.
Details →
Drainage
Drainage work replaces driveway culverts, cuts and cleans ditches, and lays tile drainage to a measured fall so water leaves the property.
Details →
Mowing
Mowing covers weekly, seasonal and one-off cutting of lawns, pastures, fields, trails and fence rows — the recurring work that keeps ground from getting away from you.

How does it work?
You call
Tell us roughly where you are and what needs doing. Two minutes on the phone usually settles it.

For anything beyond a simple cut, we come and look at the ground. Free, and no obligation.
Upfront estimate
A clear number and what it covers — by the hour, or as a finished job.
Work gets done
Same person who quoted it turns up and does it, then follows up afterwards.
Where do we work?

Common questions
Service radius, scope of work, insurance and how pricing works — the things worth knowing before you pick up the phone.
How far out do you travel?
Material delivery runs to roughly 50 miles from Hemlock. Service work goes out to about 75. Past that it depends entirely on the size of the job — ask and you will get a straight answer rather than a runaround.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Alloway Enterprises LLC is licensed and carries liability insurance. A certificate can be provided before work starts if you or your property manager need one on file.
How big a job will you take?
Residential, agricultural and recreational land. Light excavation — trenches, stumps, footings for decks, sheds and small additions. Not basements, not commercial foundations, not large-scale commercial earthmoving. If it is outside what we do, you will be told rather than sold.
Do you do snow plowing?
No. Mowing and vegetation work runs through the growing season; snow and salt are not offered.
Can you supply the materials?
Yes. Gravel, topsoil, mulch, sand and compost can be sourced and delivered, or you can supply your own and we will place and spread it.
How do you price work?
Two ways. Routine and unpredictable work is time and materials, charged for the hours it takes. Defined outcomes — a driveway rebuilt, an area cleared, drainage installed — are quoted as a project after seeing the ground. Estimates are free.
Do you work for contractors?
Yes. Hourly work is available on a subcontract basis for builders and contractors who need trenching, hauling, clearing or site work on a job.
Which service do I need?
Find the problem on the left. If none of it fits, call — the answer is free either way.
| The problem | What it needs | Priced as |
|---|---|---|
| Grass and weeds out of hand | Field mowing or rotary cutting | Hourly |
| Lawn needs cutting every week | Weekly or seasonal mowing | Per visit |
| Brush and saplings taking over | Ground clearing | Project |
| Ground for a shed, barn or food plot | Site prep | Project |
| Gravel, topsoil or mulch delivered | Hauling & material delivery | Hourly + materials |
| Driveway full of potholes and ruts | Driveway repair & restructuring | Project |
| Water standing where it should not | Drainage or culvert work | Project |
| Trench for a water line or conduit | Light excavation / trenching | Hourly |
Hourly work is charged for the time it takes plus materials. Project work is quoted as a finished result after seeing the ground. Estimates are free.
Who does what in mid-Michigan
Some jobs are ours, some belong to the county or the state. Worth knowing before work starts — and we will tell you which is which.
- Drains and county ditches — county drain commissioners hold jurisdiction over established county drains. Saginaw County Drain Commissioner.
- Work near wetlands or streams — may need a permit from Michigan EGLE before any earth is moved.
- Culverts at a public road — the road commission usually has a say on anything in the right of way.
- Before you dig, anywhere — call MISS DIG 811. It is free, it is the law in Michigan, and we do it on every excavation.
- Habitat and food plots — guidance from Michigan DNR and the USDA NRCS.

What does owner-operated actually mean?
“Every property and paddock of land is respected with the same care and dedication — built over twenty years of managing wooded and agricultural land, here in Hemlock and on Beaver Island.”
It means one person quotes the job, does the job, and picks up the phone afterwards. There is no crew you have never met and no estimate written by someone who will never walk the property.
